In 1930s Chicago, Frankenstein asks Dr. Euphronius to help create a companion. They bring a murdered woman to life as the Bride, sparking romance, police intrigue, and sweeping social change. In January 2024, while hosting the Governors’ Awards (the honorary/lifetime achievement awards given by the same Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that presents the Oscars), comedian John Mulaney jokingly told a story about being asked to tape an audition for a small role in this film: “Ladies and gentlemen, you’re looking at me and thinking, ‘Oh, great. Another damn stand-up comedian here to make fun of us in our sacred rituals.’ Well, just so you know, I’m not that weird. I’m in high demand in the film world. Christian Bale is in talks to star opposite Jessie Buckley.’ I know who one of those people is. ‘There is no script available at this time.’ Okay, I’m listening. ‘Pending, pending your response to the material. Use the enclosed sides to put yourself on tape for the role of Young Cop.’ Come on, thank you. They actually sent me this. WME [the entertainment agency William Morris Endeavor] sent me this, let me be clear. I am not being OFFERED Young Cop. They are giving me the chance to throw my hat in the ring.
